Memorializing the Untold Stories of the

United States Colored Troops, 26th Regiment

As Quiet As It’s Kept: Memorializing the Stories of the United States Colored Troops, 26th Regiment is a two-part collaboration between Brooklyn-based organization, Bailey's Cafe, and Vietnam War veteran Herbert Sweat. The full project consists of a life-sized sculpture commemorating the veterans of the USCT and an installation performance that reimagines the lives of the USCT buried on Hart Island.

To Bear and Keep a Culture

What if Bedford-Stuyvesant was a Black utopia? Many who have been here before the early 2000s will tell you that it once was. As Quiet As It’s Kept: To Bear and Keep a Culture is a multifaceted ethnography project that directly addresses the loss of the Black cultural enclave that defined Bed-Stuy for generations. We are collaborating with Chief Baba Neil Clarke and 10 elder artists to address the loss of a lineage of culture bearers who were raised, educated, and cultivated from childhood by other culture bearers of Bed-Stuy.

Ultimately the project will serve as a roadmap to how we recultivate a close knit community that centers the mostly Black residents who live there.

Look out for public events in Fall 2026.
